Each person pays
Put the bill total and the number of people into the boxes above — the amount each person owes appears straight away. If you ordered different things, turn on Split by item. If tax or a tip needs adding, turn on that switch. Even split is the default, so for a simple dinner you change nothing but the two numbers.
Start with the amount printed on the receipt. If the receipt already includes tax, enter that figure and leave the Tax switch off. If you want tax broken out, turn on Tax and enter the rate — it is charged on the amount after any discount. Then turn on Tip and tap 15, 18 or 20, or type your own. The total is shared across however many people you set.
Do nothing — equal split is what the page does by default. Enter the bill, set the number of people, and the result is the total divided by that number. No switch needs to be on.
Turn on Split by item, then add what each person actually had and tap who shared it. Anything one person had on their own is charged to them alone. Tax, tip and any discount are then shared out in proportion to what each person's items came to, so nobody overpays for a share of the extras.
Turn on Split by item and add a row per item. Enter the price, then tap the people who shared it. An item shared by three people is divided three ways; an item only you had is charged to you in full. With this switch on, the bill amount fills itself in from the item rows.
Turn on Tax, then choose Percent % and enter the rate, or choose Amount $ and enter the tax figure from the receipt. The tax is charged on the bill after any discount, and it is shared across the people in the same proportion as their share of the bill.
Turn on Tip and tap 15, 18 or 20 — or type any percentage, or a flat dollar amount. The tip is worked out on the pre-tax amount by default; switch it to On post-tax if that is how you tip. The tip is then shared out across everyone, in proportion to their share.
Turn on Discount and enter either a percentage or a flat amount. The discount comes off the bill first, and the tax and tip are then worked out on what remains — so a coupon lowers the tax and the tip too, which is what happens on a real receipt. The saving is passed on to everyone in proportion to their share.
